Marker Name: Boating on the Rogue
Marker Text: The earliest boats were Cedar “Dugout” canoes used for thousands of years by the local Indians. The arrival of early settlers (1820-1860) brought disease, war, and the end for the local native American civilization. The settlers carried freight using rafts powered by oars, pike pole and sail to navidate the lower Rogue.
The 1900’s brought a new”double end” boat design that also carried freight using oar, sail, pike pole. During (1920-1958) the boats were outfitted with motors and propellers. These new motor powered boats made the lower Rogue accessible to more people and the area became famous due to the beautiful scenery and productive fishery. Riding the riffles of the Rogue became a famous tourism attraction.
1958 two brothers, Jerry and Alden Boice designed and built a shallow draft river boat using a new water Jet propulsion. The boat was designed to carry passengers on a narrated scenic trip up the Rogue. Jerry’s Rogue Jets, the first commercial Jet Boat tour in America was started. The rest is history!
