The other signs in this group are titled “What is an Estuary?”, “Life in an Estuary”, and “Chinook Salmon”Marker Name: What Shapes an Estuary?
Marker Text: An estuary may be a deep Fjord, a shallow embayment, or a narrow valley plain like the Rogue River Estuary. Land changes through time as a result of shifts or uplifts in the earth’s crust. This geologic history determines an estuary’s physical characteristics.
South of the Sixes River, in the Klamath Mountains, watersheds are steep, river valleys are narrow, and streams enter the ocean abruptly through short, confined estuaries. North of the Sixes River, in the Coast Range, watersheds are less steep and rivers meander gradually through long, broad, near-sea-level flood plains to enter the ocean through large well-established estuaries.
