This origins of this road are somewhat unclear, however, it was possibly built as part of an access road to early settlers houses in the Altona area. One account has the 'road' being reputedly built c.1870 by convicts for access to Alfred Langhorne's Laverton homestead, but it is more likely to have been linked with Robert Wrede's (later Cherry's) Altona pre-emptive right which was entered from the east near the end of today's Civic Parade. It is also the site of a dray track marked on an 1860s plan of the area. Another early settler, William Cherry, is said to have driven his stock along this road, over the Kororoit Creek ford and on to an abattoirs located on part of the former Williamstown Rifle Range reserve facing what is now Kororoit Creek Road.
