Not only one of the reportedly most haunted houses in the United States ("authenticated" by the US Department of Commerce), The Whaley House is the oldest brick structure still standing in Southern California and it is a Registered California State Landmark.
Several strange events ocurred here - perhaps causing it to be haunted. One of the most well known is the execution of Yankee Jim Robinson in 1851. The House used to be a courthouse and the site of the County gallows. Five to ten executions apparently took place here. Yankee Jim, had been convicted of grand larceny. When he was hung, the rope was a bit too long...and the rope failed to break his neck...so, he swung from somewhere between 15 to 45 minutes strangling to death. The executioner just happened to be his godfather! Thomas Whaley, for whom the building is named, was a spectator at the event- but did not purchase the property until 1855.
In 1857, Whaley refused to turn over court records, which were being stored at the location because the City had failed to pay to get out of it's lease- causing citizen's to threaten a raid. A cannon was even posted outside the home..and eventually when Whaley went out of town...a raid was initiated to recover the records.
There's another story of a neighbor girl who came running to partake of offered cookies at the home..and ran into a clothesline---rupturing her trachea and causing her death within minutes of having been brought inside.
