Yintai Mansion Museum, also called Yintai Residence, is located in Ningbo at the bank of the Moon Lake. Its owner Tong Huai used to be a government officer in Jiangxi and Shandong. Later, he was promoted to be an assistant officer in the Tongzhensi, the chinese emperor's reception department. Tongzhensi was also called Yintai, so Tong's residence was called Yintai-Residence.
For centuries, officers and scholars thought, the ten islands in the Moon Lake were the best place for living and giving lectures. Yintai Residence faces south to the Moon Lake. The arrangement is mild and indirect, the decoration is elegant and simple. Yintai Residence is the typical residence of a high ranked official in the mid-late of the Qing dynasty (19th century) in Ningbo.
It covers an area of 2300 squaremeters and includes the official and private rooms and furnitures from the main hall to the children's room and kitchen. It provides an example of chinese art of housing as well as the conditions and customs in the chinese province East Zhejiang of the 19th century.
In 2010, there was no entrance fee.
