The DRUM refers to any of various fishes capable of making a drumming noise; best known, and named for a large sea bass off the North Atlantic Coast.
The USS DRUM (SS-228) was launched May 12, 1941 by Portsmouth Navy Yard, New Hampshire. She was commissioned November 1, 1941, CDR R.H. Rice in command.

She successfully completed several missions in the Pacific in WWII. Decommissioned in 1946, the sub was used by the Naval reserve for the next 21 years. It eventually came to Mobile in 1969 as part of the park.
