On May 7, 1864, Union Generals Grant and Meade and their troops marched south from two intense days of fighting at Wilderness, VA towards Richmond, as did Confederate General Lee and his troops. Not far down Brock Rd., the armies met again at Spotsylvania Court House, and another battle began that lasted for two weeks.
Some of the bloodiest fighting occurred at the Bloody Angle. Soldiers fought in close contact for almost twenty hours straight. It was the longest sustained hand-to-hand fight of the entire Civil War.
After the war, many veterans returned to erect monuments at the Bloody Angle, including the 15th New Jersey Volunteers. The NJ Monument was dedicated on the 45th anniversary of the battle -- May 12, 1909. The granite monument is a square panel with a relief of a Union soldier with his rifle at rest against a battlefield. Above his head is a cross and the years 1861 and 1865 on either side.
