Edwin Godwin Reade was born on a farm in Person
County, N.C., November 13, 1812. He completed preparatory studies, engaged in farming, studied law and was admitted to the bar in 1835. He practiced law in
Roxboro.
Reade was elected as the candidate of the American Party to
the Thirty-fourth Congress (March 4, 1855-March 3, 1857). He declined to be a candidate
for re-nomination in 1856.
He served in the Confederate Senate in 1863 by appointment of Governor Vance and was president of the reconstruction convention which met in Raleigh in 1865.
He served as associate justice of the Supreme Court of North Carolina from 1868-1879, then became engaged in banking in Raleigh and died there October 18, 1894.
