Beacon Hill is an old, established neighborhood in midtown San Antonio, about a mile from downtown. The community was originally developed in the early 1900's through the 1930s with craftsman style cottages. Today this area is designated as a Neighborhood Conservation District, meaning that the general look of the houses from the street view will be protected and any new buildings will be required to conform to a set of requirements designed to keep the craftsman style appeal and feel. The leaders of Beacon Hill have also worked with the City government to develop a small linear park through part of the neighborhood that will utilize empty lots located in low area that drain away rain water runoff. The first stage of developing this park in Beacon Hill is this community garden. Not only was the central structure and layout of the garden actively participated in by the residents, but the garden is a model to other nearby neigborhoods also undergoing an awareness to preserve the character of their local community.
