Eric Hamber’s Greencroft
Builder: Hugh McLean
From its construction in 1913 until 1960 Greencroft was the home of Eric Hamber and his wife Aldene, the only daughter of B.C.’s leading industrialist, John Hendry. Hamber eventually took charge of Hendry’s empire, and became Lieutenant-Governor of B.C. and chancellor of UBC. This unique home features a chateau-style tower and Arts and Crafts detailing. Renowned for their entertaining, the Hambers hosted guests such as Louis St. Laurent, Franklin Roosevelt, King George VI and Queen Elizabeth. In 2001 the house and landscaping features were protected as part of the heritage revitalization of the property.
