World War II
The 77th Infantry Division trained at Fort Jackson in 1942 and fought on Guam, Leytl, Kerama Retto, IE Shima and Okinawa. Returning to Cebu, they took 6500 Japanese prisoners. They then returned to occupy Hokkaido, Japan where the division was deactivated in 1946. The division suffered a total of 3201 Killed in Action, 10,531 wounded and 133 Missing in Action.

Description: Full-length figure of a classically robed woman, representing Liberty, wearing a crown. She holds a torch aloft in her proper right hand and a tablet crooked in her proper left arm. Statue stands on a rectangular pedestal.
Remarks: This is one of nearly 200 small replicas of Bartholdi's Statue of Liberty (IAS record 76003645) placed around the country as part of the Boy Scouts of America's 40th anniversary (1950). According to a March 1986 Fact Sheet from the Boy Scouts of America (on file in IAS), the idea for the project originated with Jack Whitaker, then Scout Commissioner of the Kansas City Area Council. The copper statues were manufactured by Friedley-Voshardt and purchased through the Kansas City Scout office.
The sculpture was restored in April 1986 by Karkadoulias Art Bronze in Cincinnati. The tarnished and pitted statue was given a golden-brown patina and a protective coating. Missing spikes in the crown were replaced, dents were hammered out and the flame in the torch was coated with 24-karat gold.
