The Middlesex Canal flowed from Boston to Lowell, and along its former route, a number of historical plaques have been placed. This one is just off Mystic Valley Pkwy, right near a park, beach, and parking area.

The plaque reads: "Site of the Middlesex Canal which was constructed from Lowell to Charlestown in the years between 1795 and 1803 and was discontinued in 1851. After crossing Abbajona Creek, it ran along the east side of Mystic Pond where its bed and banks have been covered since 1897 by the road of the Mystic Valley Parkway."

Although not labeled as such, this plaque was probably placed by the Middlesex Canal Commission.

Visit Instructions:
When logging a Massachusetts Historic Marker, we ask that you not only describe your visit, but to upload a picture from it. The picture does not have to be of the marker - one picture of the marker is enough. But a photo of you standing next to the marker or a photograph the subject of the marker - those are examples of possible photographs to upload.
