Josefina de Vasconcellos used the grounds of Rydal Hall as a workplace. This sculpture was carved by her, but after years of asking all that might know, we have not found the name. All agree she was the creator.

Her most famous work which she carved in the grounds of Rydal Hall from a block of stone from York Minster, was 'Escape to Light'. This piece looks very similar and may be an early attempt. On one side is recumbent female figure with long flowing hair. The other side has an eagle with spread wings.
'Escape to Light' was completed by Josefina's assistants because she died before finishing the work. She started the work when she was 91.
Of the three sculptures in the grounds of Rydal Hall, at present, this is the most forlorn, without information plaque and in unkempt long grass away from main thoroughfare.
To find.
From the main entrance gate, turn south as soon as possible and within 15 metres of the gate, at present, is the sculpture.
The Escape to light sculpture associated with Josefina is at Haverigg.
Cumbria Directory names this sculpture as Escape to Light
