The state's first railroad was the horse-drawn Raleigh Experimental Railroad, which was used to carry stone for the building of the Capitol in 1833.

In 1833, a mile and quarter long experimental railroad was built in Raleigh to convey granite from a quarry to the site of the new Capitol. The rail cars were pulled by horses.
