Known as Paifang in mandarin, these wood or stone arches are said to have originated from the torana temple-gate in ancient India. They were originally used during the Tang dynasty (618AD to 705AD) to designate the main subdivisions of Chinese cities, but later came to be used as a type of memorial architecture. In more modern times these gates are usually given to cities by China as a token of their esteem, or else set up by local business or community organization.
What is special about the arch?
A team of 16 Chinese technicians coming from Beijing to provide assistance to the construction, decoration and painting of the arch.
The arch is about 12 metres tall with glazed golden tiles donated by China.
It follows the traditional Chinese architecture design with many special features.
5 special metal coins and 5 colour spreads will be embedded in the structure as a tradition to bring blessings. The oldest coin was discovered in the Tang Dynasty with over 1000-year history.
