The artist of this piece, Jonathan Borofsky, has produced several similar Hammering Man sculptures which are scattered across major cities of the world..
The sculpture is 48 feet tall, depicts a man with a hammer with an arm which is electrically mechanized to move in a hammering motion. The number 3277164 is painted on the figure's back leg. This piece is dated 1992. The Smithsonian Inventory has 6 photos of the work on it's website.
The artist created this piece to honor all workers...but, the first Hammering Man was sited in Frankfurt in 1990 as a protest against neo-Nazism.
