Originally the base was constructed in the early 1930s and used as a refueling base during the Second World War for bombers being ferried to England. In the early 1950s it became a training base and the co-ordination centre for the Pinetree Line, later it was selected as the Canadian counterpart to the US's Cheyenne Mountain control center. In the 1960s and early '70s it was the control centre for a Bomarc missile system, long since decommissioned. This sign just outside the base is adjacent to the Aerospace Defence Park which features radar arrays, a Voodoo jet fighter and other artifacts from the base's aerospace defence role.
