Brompton, formerly known as the Marye House, had a direct vantage point during the Battle of Fredericksburg. Now home for the president of University of Mary Washington.

BROMPTON, a two-story brick house with one-story wings, built about 1837 by John Lawrence Marye. The high gabled roof of the main unit extends forward to form a portico its pediment pierced by
a lunette supported by four slender Ionic columns. An elliptical fanlight over the door and the delicate detail of the portico cornice, repeated under the eaves of the wings, are noteworthy. Inside, a hall extends across the front. The drawing rooms, in
the wings, have mantels of Italian marble imported for the White House but discarded because of slight defects. Brompton's peaceful existence on its hillside came to an abrupt end in December 1862, when Confederate officers used the porch as a vantage point to observe the progress of Federal troops below.
