The Elam house is one of the largest Usionian houses, other than Wingspread outside Racine, WI, and the Gillin house, in Dallas, TX. According to Storrer, the Elams mentioned their interest in having a Wright house built to apprentice, John Howe, and he immediately set up a meeting with Mr. Wright. The main floor is 148 feet long set on a 4 foot module. Below the living room, workspace, and study are the servant's quarters and a workshop. A 40 foot garage extension is also at this level.

Massive limestone piers from stone quarried near Taliesin support a dramatic cantilevered balcony. Cypress is used for the siding and ceilings. The roof is cedar shakes.

The Elams had a falling out with Wright and they finished the kitchen on their own. They ran into financial difficulties with their California orchards and sold to a neighbor down the street.
