The text on the marker reads "Noted preacher, educator, naturalist, and historian. Born Boston, Mass. Harvard College 1762. School teacher at Portsmouth and Greenland. Pastor of First Congregational Church at nearby Dover, 1766-1786. Published first History of New Hampshire. Founded Massachusetts Historical Society 1794. A New Hampshire county perpetuates his name."

This marker can only be reached from the North bound lane of the Spaulding Turnpike (Route 16). To reach the marker, get on the Spaulding Turnpike at, or south of, the Exit 5 area (Hilton State Park), and head north. The marker is found in a small parking area immediately before the tolls.
