Long Description:
This granite marker honoring Col. John L. Smith is in a small park just north of Lexington. It is just south of where Highway 77 forks (to Purcell on the west, and to Lexington on the south).

At this park are two historical markers and this monument honoring Col. Smith. There are trees, many picnic tables, and a pavilion. Parking is on the south side in a gravel lot, next to the church.

Col. John L. Smith was a WWII flying ace and a Medal of Honor recipient.

Dec. 26, 1914 - June 10, 1972

Col. John Lucian Smith U.S.M.C. in 54 days of aerial combat in the Soloman Islands.
He destroyed 19 Japanese planes to become the leading Air Ace of World War II.
At that time his awards include the Medal of Honor, the Navy Cross, the British Distinguished Service Medal, the Legion of Honor and the Air Medal with one star.
