In The Morning After, Merlin, played by Peter Barkworth, steals some phials of sleeping gas from a research establishment. Steed & Tara set out to pick Merlin up. At the rendezvous Merlin breaks a phial of sleeping gas hoping to escape in the confusion. Unfortunately Steed has locked the door, leading to Steed, Tara and Merlin falling asleep for 24 hours. When Steed and Merlin wake up they find that the phones don’t work and the streets are deserted. They walk the streets and find that the town is deserted except for patrolling troops who are organising firing squads for anyone they find. Eventually the pair come across a news crew who show them the evacuation of the town.
The town has been evacuated so that the army can defuse a nuclear bomb hidden in an international ligation. The reality is more sinister, however, as the rogue army unit is in fact planting a nuclear device in order to hold the government to ransom. Steed, with Merlin's help, manage to enter the building where the bomb is being primed and use the sleeping gas to overcome the rogue army unit.
One of the locations in Fishpool St is where Steed and Merlin, who are in Steed’s car, are stopped by an abandoned lorry (same location used in Foyle’s War - Eagle Day). After that Steed and Merlin walk the empty streets. The other location shot is when Steed has been captured by the army and Merlin goes to his car in Fishpool St to recover more sleeping gas.
