V Ceskoslovensku byla tajne pripravena komunistickou stranou, s podporou Sovetského svazu, menová reforma. Reforma mela rešit problémy s nedostatkem potravin a spotrebního zboží. Navíc byl k tomuto datu zrušen prádelový systém, který zajištoval alespon ten nejnutnejší potreby obyvatelstva.
Menová reforma byla nastavena v tak krutém pomeru, že pripravily obyvatelstvo o celoživotní úspory.
Jedinec si mohl v hotovosti vymenit nejvýše 300 korun v pomeru 5:1. Veškerou další hotovost banky vymenovaly v pomeru 50:1. Vklady do výše 5000 korun se prepocítávaly v pomeru 5:1, zbytek do deseti tisíc v pomeru 6,25:1. Další vklady do dvaceti tisíc se menily v pomeru 10:1 a do padesáti tisíc v pomeru 25:1. Vklady nad padesát tisíc byly znehodnoceny pomerem 30:1. Peníze uložené po 15. kvetnu se prepocítávaly v pomeru 50:1. Bez náhrady byly zlikvidovány všechny pojistky, vcetne životních, státní dluhopisy a ostatní cenné papíry.
Rozhlasem byla vyhlášena reforma 30.5.1953 v 18:00 hodin, 31.5.1953 probehla.
Republiku zasáhla vlna 130 ruzných stávek a nepokoju, nejvážnejší incidenty probehly v Plzni, kde 1.6.1953 na 20 000 osob, prevážne delníku ze Škodovky a studentu, na celé dopoledne ovládlo mesto. Byla obsazena radnice, soud, byly niceny komunistické symboly a partajní funkcionári, kterí se nestacili poschovávat, byli zfackováni, zabit však nebyl nikdo. K potlacení nepokoju musel režim nasadit na 8 tisíc príslušníku vojsk Ministerstva vnitra, Pohranicní stráže, Lidových milicí i nekteré spolehlivé útvary armády. Režim sice jisté nepokoje cekal, vždyt pohotovost bezpecnostním složkám byla vyhlášena již 28.5.1953, ale rozsah protestu jej preci jen zaskocil.
Plzenská stávka byla tvrde potlacena a následovala perzekucní opatrení, z nichž k mírnejším patrily pracovní diskriminace, vyhazování z práce, nucené vystehovávání rodin z Plzne do pohranicí. Úrady zatkly a uveznily 472 lidí. Vystoupení demonstrantu 1.cervna 1953 v Plzni a v dalších místech bylo od února 1948 prvním vyjádrením nesouhlasu v širším merítku s politikou komunistického režimu v celém východním bloku a dnes se radí v ceských poválecných dejinách na cestné místo.

Republic 130 different wave of strikes and riots, the most serious incidents took place in Pilsen, June 1, 1953 where 20 000 people, mainly workers from the car and students, to dominate the city all morning.
