The Extreme Flying Fox has been part of the adventure activities at Mokai Gravity Canyon since 2004.
The Rangitikei River carves its way through deep white, sheer vertical papa cliff gorges to the east of the main highway SH1, southeast of Taihape. The turnoff is signposted at Ohutu Road about 7km south of Taihape on SH1, Follow the bright orange road signs from here to where the Mokai Road crosses the Rangitikei River.
The zip line known as the Extreme Flying Fox allows you to fly along the 1.1 km cable at speeds up to 160kp/h or 100mp/h, from a height of 175 metres above the river. The Fox can carry up to 3 people at a time, each harnessed securely in place via 7 separate attachment points for safety.
The website describes the ride as "The Flying Fox platform is 175m above the river bed - the perfect height for a gravity-fed ride into the canyon. After being harnessed into the custom built harnesses, and then attached to the Fox block itself, the release lever is pulled and gravity takes over. You will fly down into the canyon, and under the bridge, before heading up towards the cliff face on the other side. You will then gradually slow down while rolling backwards and forwards along the cable - take in the spectacular scenery before being winched back to the top again to get off." We'll take their word for it, not being game to try it out!
The cost of a flying fox ride is NZD $155 per person.
