The Carpenteria Library is part of the Santa Barbara County Public Library system which includes the main library in the City of Santa Barbara, and County branch libraries in Solvang, Goleta, Carpinteria, Montecito, Santa Ynez and Los Olivos.

History:

It was Miss Sara Plummer that established the first library in the City of Santa Barbara, on State Street, in 1870. The library was sold to the Odd Fellows when Miss Plummer married, and they moved it to their lodge at State and Haley Streets. In time, it became a free public library when the Odd Fellows donated their collection of about 2,000 volumes to the City, following the passing of the California Municipal Library Law by the State Legislature in 1880.
