Long Description:

The coordinates are the south stairs leading to the walkway on the Hawthorne Bridge.

The Hawthorne Bridge was built in 1910 to replace the original wooden Madison Street Bridge, which was destroyed by fire in 1902. The Hawthorne is the oldest operating vertical lift bridge (a bridge that moves up in a horizontal position) in the United States. It has two steel towers with enormously heavy concrete counterweights that are used for lifting the bridge at each end of the lift span.

Instructions for logging waymark: visit the Hawthorne Bridge, and get a picture or two of it. At least one of the photos must be of you and/or of your GPSr there with the bridge in the background. Include any additional interesting information about the bridge in your log if you wish.

Visit Instructions:
1) After you've found a vertical lift bridge, go visit it, get the coordinates, a picture or two of it, and if it is in use or not still as a lift bridge.
Then log it and post your pictures! At least one of the photos must be of you and your GPS there with the bridge in the background. (No old vacation shots or photos off the internet!)
