At the time that the Utah Territory was established by Congress it stretched from the continental divide in Colorado to the eastern border of California. The northern and southern boundaries of the territory corresponded to the latitude of the current northern and southern borders of Utah. All in all, a very large chunk of land. The Pahvant Valley, where Fillmore is located, was about the geographic center of the new territory. Brigham Young selected the specific site for the new capital and the township was immediately surveyed. Fillmore remained the territorial capital until 1896 when Congress decided to move it to the more populous Salt Lake City with its access to the railroad.
