Port Orchard was originally called Sidney, a booming lumber town and port, and was Kitsap County’s first incorporated city in 1890. In 1893 it lured the county seat away from Port Madison on Bainbridge Island and remains the center of county government today.
Port Orchard is located south of Bremerton, which can be seen across the Sinclair Inlet. This passenger-only ferry, known as the "foot ferry", links these two important cities.
In 2010, this foot ferry carried 444,296 riders.
