The modern sign portrays a silhouette of city rooftops. This may be Oxford.

It is probable that the original sign featured a coat of arms honouring an Earl, Duke or Lord Oxford. One candidate may be the former Prime Minister H. H. Asquith (1852–1928) who chose the title Earl of Oxford and Asquith when he left office.
