Gilbert's Cove Lighthouse overlooks Saint Mary's Bay and Digby Neck on the Bay of Fundy. This lighthouse was first opened on 18 August 1904. It is one of only three remaining lighthouses in Nova Scotia that combine the light-keeper's residence with the lighthouse. The original light keeper was William Joseph Melanson. His daughter, Louise took over when he retired and held that position until her death in 1972.

Originally, there was a fixed red lantern placed in the cottage roof that was set 40 feet above the high water mark. From the water, the light was visible for at least seven miles. In 1922 the light was fitted with a 7th Order Fresnel Lens, which is on display at the top of the cottage roof. In 1965, the light was converted from oil to electricity and the lighthouse was automated. It was discontinued in 1984.

The local community came together to restore the lighthouse. A craft shop and tea room provide funds for its maintenance. More than 3500 visitors tour the lighthouse annually. Admission is free. In 1990 it was declared a Provincial Heritage Site.
