Cateri is another of the attractive villages in the hills of the Balange area of Corsica. Entering the village on foot, we saw a sundial between the lemon trees in the garden of a private residence at 56 Rue de Tour. This attractive design was painted on the plastered south facing wall in 1991. The asymmetry of the hour lines show this to be a morning sundial like the nearby church. Google Earth shows the wall declines at about South 5° West, not South 10° East like the church. The hour lines seem to be copied from the church even though the orientation is different. The numbering of the hour lines is also unusual, 12 hours with noon being six and counting down through the day. This is like an hours to sunset dial. There were two misplaced gnomons projecting horizontally. Neither would show correct solar time. Although nothing in the design is gnomonically correct, this sundial is an attractive addition to the renovated and well maintained residence.

Why? Why? Why? It would have taken little effort and expense to have created a proper sundial on this wall.
Sundial Type: Vertical - Wall mounted dial plate
