When the
Zion Methodist Church was built in 1859, it had a small graveyard. In 1899, Joseph and Nattie Pendleton donated more land for a cemetery with the stipulations that no church member would be denied burial and no plot would be sold. The cemetery adjoins church property on the south side.
In the Civil War, Zion Church was used as Confederate headquarters and a field hospital during the Battle of Spotsylvania Court House. Three Confederate soldiers were buried in the cemetery.
The cemetery boasts a split rail fence and wooden bench at its entrance. Burials range from undated fieldstones to the present.
