In Pawtucket, near the center of town and visible from I-95, is a white building with a stepped pyramid roof, with big red words saying "Apex." This building is both the Apex Department Store, and the headquarters for the Apex Companies. The building is a low, wide structure, with the pyaramid rising from the center of the building. There is a base from the roof, then six steps to the pyramid, then a final cap that is flatter on one side than another. On the flattened side is the name, "Apex." The pyramid is longer in one axis.
The Apex Companies web site shows that the companies cover a wide variety of activities, including retail, real estate, and consulting. Apex began as a tire service store, and grew from there.
The name comes from the initials, A. P. from the founder, Albert Pilavin, who felt that the name was appropriate for his business since "apex" is synonymous with reaching the highest level or summit. Thus, the pyramid shaped roof fits the name of the company, since a pyramid has a distinctive apex in its shape. The web site also shows that various logos used incorporated a triangular or pyramid shape. The building parking lot is accessible from Main Street.
