The Airedale Greenway opened in September 2009 and is a combined walking and cycling route linking Shipley to the East and Keighley to the West with Bingley and Saltaire. It is 7 miles long and apart from short stretches to give access to the town centres uses the towpath of the Leeds Liverpool Canal. The canal at this point follows the valley formed by the River Aire, hence the name of the route.

It was developed by a combination of the Airedale Partnership, Bradford Council, British Waterways and Sustrans to encourage people to walk and cycle more. Sustrans is a national organisation formed to encourage wider usage of cycles throughout the UK.

The route has been designated as number 696 by Sustrans.

This map is at the point where the route joins the canal at Victoria Street road bridge at Shipley.

The destinations are marked in time rather than distance to encourage people to realise that other places can in fact be reached quickly whilst walking or cycling. Times for both walking and cycling are shown.

Date placed: 01/01/2009 Historic significance: The sign was erected to mark the formation of a new walking and cycling route to encourage people to walk or cycle rather than use cars.
