In the St. Lawrence churchyard, a few metres from its northern entrance from Church Street, stands this memorial - the "shrine" - to those "from this parish" who died during military service in the Great War of 1914-18.
The memorial consists of a tall, canopied, stout wooden crucifix rising from an inscribed granite pedestal.
On the canopy are the words
"Greater love than this hath no man".
It is not known exactly when it was erected, but it was certainly in existence in March 1921.
The names of the dead are listed on 16 bronze plaques affixed to the wooden upright:
Frederick William BARNETT
Noel Douglas BAYLY
Mowbray BESSELL
Henry Edward Thomas BULLEN
Frederick Orlando KEMP
Harry Edward L. MARCHANT
Frederick MASKELL
William OTTAWAY
Archibald PATTEN
Richard ROBERTS
William James SCARFF
Albert Henry SMITH
William Charles (CURTIS) TAYLOR
Reginald George VIGARS
Arthur WELLS
Bob WHITTINGTON
The average age upon death was only 24.4 years!
