Buckingham Fountain - Chicago, IL - Route 66 - The Mother Road on Waymarking.com

Starting (or ending) in Chicago's Grant Park, the huge Buckingham Fountain is recognized as the terminus of the old Route 66.


This fountain was dedicated in 1927 and was the largest decorative fountain in the world at the time. it still remains as one of the world's largest. it was inspired by the Latona Fountain at Versaillis, France.
From the Wikipedia article (visit link) we also learn:
"The fountain itself represents Lake Michigan, with each sea horse symbolizing the states of Illinois, Wisconsin, Michigan and Indiana, that border the lake. The fountain was designed by beaux arts architect Edward H. Bennett. The statues were created by the French sculptor Marcel F. Loyau."

The fountain operates from mid-April to mid-October.
