The plaque says, "In 1964, the Air Force neede a fuel-efficient, high-thrust engine for its next-generation large transport. In response, General electric developed the first high by-pass turbofan engine, the TF-39-GE. Begining in 1969, this engine powered Lockheed's C-5 Galaxy. By 1997, 665 had been produced.

A high-bypass enging has a large fan at the fron that routes much of the air that enters the intake around the outside of the engine core, resulting in increased takeoff thrust, lower noise levels, and decreased fuel consumption.

This design is closely related to the CF-6 commercail family of engines for commercail airliners an the LM2500 used by the U.S. Navy for ship propulsion."
