The
Chautauqua National Wildlife Refuge is 4,388 acres mostly consisting of 3,200 acres of impounded water along the Illinois River forming Lake Chautauqua.
Visitors to the refuge can hike, bird watch, fish, and hunt seasonally. Boat access for fishing is available. Picnic facilities are scattered throughout the refuge.
Most of the birds found in the refuge are migratory waterfowl such as Great Blue Herons, Wood Ducks, and Dowitchers. However, refuge personnel have recorded over 150 Bald Eagles in the refuge.
