The church is near the River Mersey and the port of Liverpool. It was always a useful landmark for shipping and in 1746 a wooden tower was added as a further aid to navigation. Then in 1775 it was decided to extend the main body of the church. Whilst this work was carried out the tower was left standing, a decision which weakened the tower.
In 1810 the weakened tower collapsed during a service killing 25 people. The current tower was rebuilt in 1815 and survived bombing in air raids during World War II, even though the main body of the church was destroyed.
The tower has a mixture of white faced and black faced clocks.
