The underlying rock is soft red sandstone making the carving of these stone graves possible. There were over a hundred graves in this area. Most have been reburied in the close by churchyard. Some of the older bones are in Lancaster Museum.

The graves are very small and probably held only the bones. They would have been covered, possibly with a hogs back cover. There are chiselled edges to accept a cover. The group of six have a socket at one end possibly to mount a cross. One of the six has no socket. This is all guess work as there is no documentary evidence surviving from 600 AD when these graves date from.
Nearby are the ruins of St Patrick's chapel, with a board explaining all. The board shows where all the graves were found. Not your usual graveyard. Open land with outcropping rock.
