Located a few feet from the schoolhouse where the idea for the Order of Knights of Pythias came to the young teacher who became its founder, Justus Rathbone.

Granite marker with bas-relief of Justus Rathbone on the front. Bronze plaque on the back reads:

PYTHIAN SHRINE

While teaching school here in
1860 and 1861, Justus Henry Rathbone,
founder of the order, Knights of
Pythias, wrote the first ritual of
the order.
This property was purchased by
members living in Michigan in 1905.
It was presented to the Grand
Domain of Michigan in 1921, who in turn
presented it to the Supreme Lodge
Knights of Pythias, August 16, 1930.
It is the purpose of the members
of the order to perpetuate it as
a Pythian Shrine and to express
reverence to the beloved founder.
