This weir is constructed as a dam holding back a sizeable reserve of water. There are two paddle controls on the north bank to control the water level but they may not work now. The overflow flows all the year and is a favourite place to walk to from the Monsal Head Hotel. Looking east from here you can see the Headstones Railway Viaduct.
Any remains of a mill which may have been driven from this head of water are long gone.
Parking is available next to the Hotel with a daily charge of £5.00 per vehicle.
