Bereits seit über 700 Jahren hat der Wiener Christkindlmarkt für alle Wienerinnen und Wiener und für alle Besucher unserer liebenswerten Stadt eine ganz besondere Anziehungskraft. Dieser Markt wird seit jeher von Kleinstgewerbetreibenden beschickt.
Bereits 1296 erteilte Albrecht I. den Wiener Händlern und Gewerbetreibenden das Privilegium zur Abhaltung eines "Dezembermarktes", um die Versorgung der Wiener Bevölkerung sicherzustellen. Im 16. Jahrhundert wurde der heutige Christkindlmarkt unter dem Namen "Thomasmarkt" als Markt zur Weihnachts- und Neujahrszeit abgehalten.
Neben dem üblichen Warenangebot der Händler (Textilien, Lebensmittel) wurden auch die in Mode gekommenen Lebzelter- und Zuckerbäckerwaren angeboten. Im 18. Jahrhundert führte dieser Markt die Bezeichnung "Nikolo- und Weihnachtsmarkt" bzw. "Krippenmarkt" und wurde wiederum nur von Händlern und Gewerbetreibenden bezogen.
Seit Jahrhunderten sind auf diesem Markt die Marktkaufleute als Kleinstgewerbetreibende tätig. Auch in schlechten Zeiten waren sie immer bemüht, ein großes Warensortiment herbeizuschaffen und für den Kunden feilzuhalten. Ein Weihnachtsfest, wie es heute gefeiert wird, kam in Wien in der Biedermeierzeit auf, als in den Palais des vornehmen Adels die ersten Weihnachtsbäume nach norddeutscher Sitte aufgestellt wurden.
Auch am Wiener Rathausplatz, wo der Markt seit 1975 abgehalten wird, hat dieser Markt, auf dem Händler und Gewerbetreibende ihre Verkäufe tätigen, nichts von seinem Flair verloren. Die Anziehungskraft des Christkindlmarktes wächst von Jahr zu Jahr. Das kleine Christkindlmarkt-Städtchen - 145 Hütten - gehört nicht mehr den Wienern alleine, es ist beinahe in den Besitz aller Österreicher und ausländischer Wienbesucher übergegangen. Viele Besucher, ca. drei Millionen, wovon 500.000 aus dem Ausland kommen, besuchen diese Veranstaltung.
