On the main valley road up the Cartmel valley is this lovely milestone. Unfortunately the stone mason was probably illiterate and reversed the S in Hawkshead. Other S's are correct.

Each year all milestones in the valley get a coat of paint. Many years ago the painter took it upon himself to depict in the S correctly. The incorrect paint work was trued in later years, making a very interesting point from history.
The original stone mason was not sure about Ss. Look at the next S in MILE S. Slightly adrift from the rest of the word.
