The stone mason has misspelt ALITHWAITE. This milestone is on the southern cross roads set in to a wall, opposite the headless cross, which gives its name to the junction in Cartmel.

ALITHWAITE should have double Ls. The nearby village has not changed its name. The stone mason may not have been local nor the person who wrote the instructions.
