"The relief was elliptical, about three feet long, and carved with a rudimentary face - a depiction of the West Wind as an angel-like countenance. Gusting from the angels mouth, away from the Vatican ...the breath of God."

"They had circled away from the West Ponente in an attempt to lose the reporter but were now moving back towards the relief. "
"Despite the clanging bells, the area seemed perfectly calm. Tourist wandered. A homeless drunk dozed awkwardly at the base of the obelisk."

"Then ... the little girl began to scream."

In order to prevent the the Illuminati from destroying Vatican City with the use of antimatter, Harvard symbologist Robert Langdon must retrace the "Path of Illumination". These are four places in Rome associated with the primordial elements: 'Earth', 'Air', 'Fire', and 'Water'. Each will lead to the next and the last one "Water" leads to the final destination.

Robert Langdon arrives at the second stop on the "Path of Illumination" - "Air". "Air" is represented by Bernini's bas relief, West Ponente, in the wind compass rose surrounding the obelisk at the center of St. Peter's Square in the Vatican. Under the obelisk the second murder occurs. Cardinal Lamasse, a leading candidate to be the next pope, dies of asphyxiation after his lungs were punctured and he was left to die.
Short Description: The obelisk and the West Wind sculpture are a few feet apart. Cardinal Lamasse is murdered under the obelisk.
