Vanderbilt University
Marker # 3A 51
Text: “An independent, privately supported university founded 1875 by Commodore Cornelius Vanderbilt, New York shipping & railway magnate, who gave $1,000,000 to start the university & expressed his wish that it should ‘contribute to strengthening the ties which should exist between all geographical sections of our common country.’”
Notes: Marker is somewhat easy to get to. Located near the intersection of West End Avenue and Louise Avenue on the sidewalk around Vanderbilt University Campus. Most parking is by permit only, or metered, however there is public parking near the intersection of 23rd and West End in the parking lot of some businesses. This will be quite a walk, however. It may be acceptable to park in the roundabout entrance of Vanderbilt University near the marker for short periods of time, but I wouldn't dwell there for risk of being towed. While at the roundabout, you can snag a picture of the Commodore Vanderbilt statue and the Vanderbilt Clock Tower.
