Text of mark:

Battle of Springfield

At this location stood the two-story brick Methodist Church converted by Federal authorities into the city's arsenal.  In the frantic predawn hours of January 8, 1863, three hundred Union convalescent soldiers and civilian volunteers, organized into companies by Capt. C.B. McAfee, 3rd MSM Cavalry, and Brigade Surgeon Samuel H. Melcher, marched to the Methodist Church from the square.  Here they received weapons and ammunition.  These men were then sent to man Fort No. 4 and the city's defenses.
