Located in the Walking Sands Rest Area, on the Northbound I-25, is this New Mexico history sign. A twin of this sign is located on the southbound Walking Sands Rest Area, seen just across the highway.

Rio Salado Sand Dunes

Sand blown northeasterly from the normally dry bed of the Rio Salado forms dunes along this part of Rio Grande Valley.
The Rio Grande is in a deep down-dropped trench with uplifted Los Pinos Mountains to east and the Ladron Mountains to northwest.
Rocks on the crest of the Ladrons are 4 miles deep below the sand dunes.
