The Glendale Public Library was originally built as part of the Civic Center to the east. The most transparent facades are used to open the library, interfacing the street light and city activity. The north and south glass facades function as new entrances to the building. Sections of the second floor are cantilevered above the ground level. An unusual stairway that appears outside the building is enclosed with glass.

From the Los Angeles Times:

Becket aficionados may not be familiar with one of the most muscular and extroverted works his firm, Welton Becket Associates, ever designed: The main branch of the Glendale Public Library, which opened in 1973. (Following Becket’s death in 1969, the project was completed by his colleagues at the firm.) With its mute concrete exterior and angular, battlement-like bay windows, the library reflects an interest in the tough-minded offshoot of late modernism known as Brutalism. For that reason alone the library stands out in Southern California, where significant Brutalist designs are relatively rare

A YouTube video shows the architects vision plan and design philosophy.
